Objectives:
This course guides students as they create a Garifuna drum using Garifuna cultural practices. It is a pass/fail course. Students will be assessed on the quality of the drum they created based on predefined Garifuna culture based criteria.
The reason for this course is to preserve the craft of Garifuna drum making. The value is a return to cultural awareness with the understanding that creating a Garifuna drum is not a matter of mechanics but a matter of cultural connection.
The primary aim of the course is to teach students how to create a Garifuna drum, including selecting quality materials with which to make the drum and learning the tools used.
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- List and describe the 3 types of Garifuna drums
- Identify wood and quality aspects.
- Identify skins and quality aspects.
- Identify tools and be able to handle tools safely.
- List the steps involved in Garifuna drum creation.
- Complete the steps required to create a drum
Pre -requisites: $600 for instructor and all materials
Co-requisites: None
Anti-requisites: 10 years old or older
